Laws and regulations

Laws govern the amount of power these motors can produce and the speed at which they can produce it. In the UK, Europe, and Australia, the maximum power allowed by law is one-third of a single horsepower, with a maximum assisted speed of 15.5mph. The electric assist can only be activated by pedaling and cannot be operated by just using a throttle.

The power and speed limit still apply to electric bikes where pedal assistance is used (and most can be switched to function as pedal-assist only) – so riders should be aware that where laws are banning such vehicles, they cannot just switch it off when it suits them.

Storage and Locks

An electric bike will be harder to steal than a standard bike. That’s because its battery is mounted on the bike’s frame (or rear rack in the case of some e-bikes). This makes it impossible to take off without disassembling the bike and removing the battery. The downside is, e-bikes are often more expensive than standard bikes, and it would be a shame if you had to replace yours. So, how do you protect your investment?

The issues are many, but most important are the size of the bike, its components, and the locking area.
